[ARCHIVED] Homicide and Bomb Threat in Holland, Suspect in Custody

Saturday afternoon at about 2:15 p.m. Holland DPS police and firefighters responded to a residence in the 300 block of W 19th St. for a report of a subject shot.  Upon arrival, the victim, Miguel Raul Zamudio, was located in a driveway of a residence with a gunshot wound to the head. Medical treatment was provided and Mr. Zamudio was taken to Holland Hospital for treatment. Officers quickly located the suspect who was taken into custody as he was exiting an adjacent house to where the victim had been found. The suspect then made claims of there being a bomb and other explosive in the residence from which he had just exited.

Based on the suspects statements, nearby residences were evacuated until it could be determined if there were any explosives in the house. The ATF was contacted and responded to the scene. ATF Bomb technicians checked the house, no explosives were located and the house was clear of any threat. It was later determined the suspect did not reside at, and had no connection to, the neighboring house he had entered.

Based on the initial investigation, the victim was visiting family, they were outside the residence when the suspect approached. They saw the suspect holding a firearm and all began to retreat into the home. The suspect continued to approach and shot the victim in the head.

The suspect, who resided on Harrison Ave., was not known to the victim.

Investigators have also found that, prior to the shooting, the suspect had been involved in a domestic incident at his residence during which he had pointed a gun at his girlfriend, who fled the house.

The Mr. Zamudio had been transferred to Corwell Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Yesterday, he was pronounced deceased.

The suspect was originally charged with Attempt Homicide. Detectives will work with the Ottawa County Prosecutors Office to amend the charge to Homicide. The suspect’s name is being withheld pending arraignment.

Holland DPS was assisted on scene by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and ATF.
