[ARCHIVED] 2020 Season Starts June 15!

Logo-Full Color-Horizontal

When will Windmill Island Gardens open?

We plan re-open in a limited capacity on Monday, June 15.

What are your hours?

Upon reopening, we will be open our normal hours: 7 days a week, 9:30am – 6pm with the last entry tickets sold at 5pm. (Must arrive by 5 to get entrance to the park.)

What is admission?

As we are unable to open all our attractions, we will be temporarily lowering admission to $5 with those 8 and under admitted free. We encourage guests to pay with credit card to avoid physical money transactions. Donations are welcome to help us continue our work onsite and online.

What will be open and not open?

We are considering each part of the park separately to provide a safe and quality guest experience. The biggest change is that we are unable to safely open the windmill for tours at this time. Visitors will be able to walk up to it and get a picture taken with it, just not go inside. However, we’re excited to offer a virtual tour via a film featuring our miller. We will continue to plan for the opening of our other attractions as soon as we can do so safely.

What steps are being taken to ensure the safety of visitors?

We will be following all local, state and federal guidelines to instruct us how to open and maintain our attractions. We will be limiting the amount of visitors in our buildings (Posthouse, Gift Shops and Pavilion). Masks must be worn in all buildings and should be worn if guests cannot properly socially distance on the grounds.

Staff will be cleaning shared surfaces throughout the day with a thorough cleaning done each evening and as needed. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the park for guest and staff use.

We ask that anyone who has COVID-19, has been in contact with someone with COVID-19 in the past 2 weeks, or is experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 (cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, fever, vomiting, diarrhea or loss of sense of taste/smell) refrain from visiting our park at this time.

Do I need to wear a mask?

Guests should bring a mask as they must be worn in all buildings and should be worn on the grounds if guests cannot properly socially distance. This is done for the safety of other guests and our staff. Thank you for your understanding.

Can I purchase tickets in advance?

While we do not currently offer advance ticket purchase, guests may purchase a membership online HERE which provides free access to our site and free/reduced access to dozens of other American Horticultural Society reciprocal gardens in the US and Canada. Please allow 2 weeks for your membership card to arrive.

What is the status of programs or events?

Most 2020 programming has been postponed. Please monitor our website and Facebook for updates.

Will Community Garden plots be available this year?

Yes, we do plan to have the Community Garden open in 2020. Please email for more details.

What is the status of weddings?

Currently, Michigan allows indoor gatherings up to 10 people so receptions are not yet possible in our Pavilion. We plan to host weddings as soon as we can do so legally and safely.  If you are interested in holding a wedding or event at Windmill Island Gardens (or have one scheduled currently), please reach out to our wedding coordinator Julia Johnson -

Can I buy flour, wooden shoes, Delft, etc.?

We hope to offer most items in our Gift Shops. Please note that mill products (flour, grits, etc.) may be limited or unavailable at this time.

Are you still hiring?

Yes, we are currently accepting applications HERE.

Are you going to have a tulip dig?

Unfortunately, the 2020 Tulip Dig has been canceled for safety reasons. At Windmill Island Gardens, our staff will be removing the tulips and planting with beautiful annuals for our visitors to enjoy this summer. Then we will replant with tulips this fall for another wonderful tulip display in spring 2021!

Have you been affected by high water levels?

Yes, as our park is on the Macatawa River (which is connected to Lake Michigan via Lake Macatawa) we have experienced periodic flooding of some areas including our causeway. Our staff continues to adapt to this situation for the long and short-term but we ask that all guests follow posted instructions, stay out of flooded areas, and remain aware of their surroundings at all times.

How can I help support Windmill Island Gardens?

We would welcome you to purchase a membership to support our work HERE. Memberships bought now will be valid through the 2021 season due to the uncertainty this year. They allow free access to Windmill Island Gardens as well as free/reduced access to many gardens in the American Horticultural Society reciprocal program. Donations to assist our future endeavors are accepted HERE and very much appreciated!
