The Holland Department of Public Safety announces the selection of Sergeant Scott Weiss as our Officer of the year.
Sergeant Weiss started his career with the Holland Police Department as a police cadet in 1990 and then in 1993 he was hired as a police officer. He graduated from Holland Christian High School in 1988 and then obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Grand Valley State University.
Over the year Sgt. Weiss has held a variety of positions and assignments including being a community police officer, field training officer, WEMET detective, Firearms instructor and was a member of the department Special Enforcement Team. In 2001 he was promoted to patrol sergeant and since been a detective sergeant, motor unit sergeant and field training supervisor
Sgt. Weiss currently is a patrol shift supervisor who has a reputation as a very hard worker and is well respected throughout the department. The officer of the year selection process is nomination driven and Sgt. Weiss was nominated, in part, for being “an excellent ambassador for the HDPS, an outstanding supervisor, and a stellar, all-around cop”.
Since we were not able to do our annual department gathering this year, Chief Messer made the announcement and presentation earlier this week to Sgt. Weiss at the department with on-duty staff, which was live streamed for staff not working at the time.
We congratulation Sgt. Weiss for this well deserved recognition.
