[ARCHIVED] Fire Quickly Contained at the Gateway Mission Men's Center at 166 River Ave

At 6:50 PM tonight the Holland Fire Department was dispatched to a possible fire at the Gateway Mission Men's Center at 166 South River. About 7 minutes later, first arriving units reported that there was no evidence of fire from the exterior of the building. Upon further investigation firefighters identified a fire in a kitchen storage room. The fire was controlled by the building's fire protection system. Firefighters verified the fire was extinguished and shifted their efforts towards salvaging food stuffs and property as quickly as possible.

One occupant in this area of the building at the time of the fire was treated on scene for smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries to occupants or responding firefighters. Damage is confined to a small portion of the building and no occupants will be displaced as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire appears to be electrical in origin however the department's Fire Marshal has initiated an investigation to confirm the origin and cause of the fire.

Ottawa County Health Department officials have responded to inspect the cooking facilities and assist Gateway Mission staff with being able re-open the kitchen to be able to serve food in the morning.

Other agencies assisting with this incident include the Holland Police Department and American Medical Response.
