Holland Ambassador Academy graduated its second class on Monday, November 10, 2025. The students completed the 10-week course, gaining in-depth knowledge of Holland City government operations. The class got a behind-the-scenes look at various City departments, including public safety, parks & rec, transportation, the Mayor and City Council governance structure, and so much more.  


The application window for the 2026 Holland Ambassador Academy will open in late spring. Check this page and our social media pages for the opening date.


Holland Ambassador Academy is a program for the residents of the City of Holland. Participants will learn how the City government works and gain insight into the operations of City services and programs. 


Applicant Criteria

  • City of Holland resident (renter or homeowner) and 18 or older. If space allows, consideration will be given to non-City residents.
  • Must complete the application for consideration.
  • Commit to attending all ten classes but not miss more than two classes.
  • Cannot currently be running for an elected office.

The 2025 Academy consists of 10 classes, beginning September 8 and running through November 10. Each class meets on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at various City department locations throughout Holland. City Officials, Department Directors, and staff members will teach the classes. They will give presentations and tours, discuss a range of topics, and offer hands-on learning related to the City's services and programs.

This is an excellent program to learn more about how the City of Holland operates and how participants can get involved in making Holland a great place to live, work, play, and visit. 


Holland Ambassador Academy classes will include the following departments:

  • Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and Assistant City Manager
  • Holland Department of Public Safety - Police Services
  • Holland Department of Public Safety - Fire Services
  • Windmill Island Gardens, Principal Shopping District, Downtown Development Authority, Holland Civic Center
  • Parks, Cemeteries & Recreation Department
  • Transportation & Streets Department
  • Finance, City Clerk, Human Relations & Youth Services, Community & Neighborhood Services, Human Resources, Technology Services, and Communications
  • Holland Board of Public Works/Holland Energy Park
  • Authorities (Holland Aquatic Center, Herrick District Library, MAX Transit, and West Michigan Regional Airport)

Class location information will be provided with the Academy syllabus. Classes will be held indoors and outdoors, including bus tours, short walks, and outdoor activities (weather permitting). Please wear comfortable shoes and dress according to the weather and activities. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from each class. Light dinner and drinks will be provided at each class.
