HYAC Sustainability Event address correction
Skip the Straw flyer

February 18th, at CultureWorks , the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi will demonstrate how Native American traditions have respected and protected the environment.

National Skip the Straw Day was started by teen activists in Whitehall, MI in 2017. Skip the Straw Day is the fourth Friday of February each year. This year, February 24th, HYAC Environmental Committee is teaming up with restaurants in downtown Holland, MI. Restaurants will not automatically serve straws unless the customer asks for one. They will post flyers and wait staff will wear buttons advertising skipping the straw. Maybe for one day, we can all ask ourselves, do I really need a straw?

The Environmental Committee started this year with a beach clean-up at Holland State Park. The committee teamed up with M.A.C.C. and Hope College Office of Sustainability. We had over 20 volunteers who picked up 75-80 lbs. of mostly small pieces of plastic.  Way to go volunteers!
